The notion that youth is synonymous with overall fitness is being slowly but surely questioned and revised. The notion that the body "ages" as a matter of course is being replaced by the fact that "deterioration" is the real cause of aging: neglect through misuse and disuse.
Lack of proper exercise, stress and poor nutrition are the real culprits of both cosmetic and physical afflictions of the "aging" of the body. The President's Council on Physical Fitness acknowledges that exercise and proper nutrition can reverse the aging process. Even though the statistics on the decline of bodily functions (becaue of lack of exercise) are quite alarming, the statistics on the renewal of these lost capabilities are definitely encouraging! Studies show that a 65 year old who trains regularly can have a greater physical work capacity than a sedentary 35 year old!
In order for exercise to have a rejuvenating effect on the whole body, it must produce a beneficial effect on all systems: cardiovascular, muscular and skeletal. Aerobic exercise (running, aerobic dance) improves heart and lung capacities and weight training strengthens both muscular and skeletal systems.
As far as nutrition goes, many experts in the field believe that fats in the diet are one of the main contributors to aging. A high fat diet-especially the unsaturated type-contains the highest concentration of free radicals. Free radicals are molecular compounds formed by natural oxidation processes. According to Dr. Robert Haas, author of Eat to Win , free radicals destroy healthy cells and speed up aging. Therefore, a fat-restricted diet is essential in the reversal of the aging process.
A healthy, nutritional diet should consist of 65% carbohydrates, 20% protein and 15% fat. Proper water intake of 8 to 10 glasses per day is also essential for keeping the system flushed.
Through specific, regular exercise and sound nutrition, we can reverse the aging process; it is the closest thing we have to the fountain of youth. It is now all up to you to make a lifetime commitment and follow it through! A total fitness lifestyle has made it possible for me to feel, look and perform better at 59 than I ever did at 25! It can do the same for you.
NOTE: Before starting any exercise and nutritional program, be sure to consult your physician.
